about

Nova Scotia songwriter Carleton Stone’s latest single, “Fences,” is an anthem for the down-but-not-out romantics; an epic modern love story that unfolds in soaring fashion on the wings of poignant piano and glowing synth. Driven by a relentless beat, Stone guides us through the timeline of a fractured relationship.

“If it's what they want you can try and let go, even when the pill's real hard to swallow,” Stone sings during the rousing chorus. "And if you ever know a love like I know, you'd still never give up."

The new track, co-written by Kayleigh O’Connor, owes its ecstatic soundscape to a crack team of musicians and studio wizards, including Todd Lumley, Loel Campbell, Corey LeRue, and Colin Buchanan.

When the final notes of the song’s climax ring out, there’s still no resolution, but most great love stories never end—they just transform. “Fences” provides a balm for the broken-hearted who aren’t ready to throw in the towel just yet.

lyrics

Lyrics:
I was feeling like the world was ours
You were looking like a work of art
End of my bed in that hotel
I felt something that I never felt
Wanted to but I couldn't call
You were moving back to Montreal
With all of your art school friends
You were so different with them

I was mad, she was sad
But it's all in the past
She was drunk, all her hair
I was holding it back
Up all night, we would fight
And if anybody asks
Still the best I ever had

You can fall in love, tell your friends about it
If your heart breaks put a fence around it
If you have to learn how to live without it
You'd still never give up
If it's what they want you can try and let go
Even when the pill's real hard to swallow
But if you ever know a love like I know
You'd still never give up

The world stopped when the band broke up
Half a glass became an empty cup
The man you love to an empty shell
I know I put you through a living hell
A dozen roses six months too late
Speeding the wrong way down the interstate
Something mean was coming out your lips
Knew it was something that I couldn't fix

You were angry, I was sad
Two hearts broke in half
You were talking through the tears
I was holding 'em back
Up all night, you were right
And if anybody asks
Still the best I ever had

You can fall in love, tell your friends about it
When your heart breaks put a fence around it
If you have to learn how to live without it
You'd still never give up
If it's what they want you can try and let go
Even when the pill's real hard to swallow
And if you ever know a love like I know
You'd still never give up

If you turn back around, even now
I'd probably put the guard down for ya
Heart on the ground, even now
Even now

You can fall in love, tell your friends about it
When your heart breaks put a fence around it
If you ever have to live without it
Still never give up
If it's what they want you can try and let go
Even when the pill's real hard to swallow
If you ever know a love like I know
Still never give up
